Practice Textile Sustainability

Resources & inspiration

As guild members, we deeply appreciate fiber arts.  We love making and collecting textiles. However, over the past 75 years the textile industry has undergone enormous changes as it switched from plant and animal based materials to oil and chemical based ones. Find out why we need to move urgently toward sustainable practices, what kinds of exciting new eco-friendly fibers and textiles are coming down the pipeline, and how you can incorporate sustainability in your fiber arts work. Gigi Matthews gave the guild a powerful program on these changes and how we can make steps to move towards more sustainability in our corner of the world. She graciously gave us to post this program permanently and inspired us to include our voice about this important movement.

Tatter Textile Library

The mission of TATTER is to promote the consciousness of cloth by considering and celebrating cloth's intrinsic and essential relationship in human life – through portals that include but are not limited to art, shelter, comfort, science, commerce, and culture. Located in Brooklyn, NY.

Redress Raleigh

Redress Raleigh’s mission is to cultivate a more responsible ecosystem for the fashion industry by educating and mobilizing consumers to be positive advocates while leveraging industry-related partnerships.

The Livestock Conservancy

This program encourages fiber artists to try using rare wools, and helps shepherds learn how to prepare their wool for sale and how to reach potential customers, thereby making it more profitable to raise heritage breeds.

Weave a Real Peace

WARP is a catalyst for improving the quality of life of textile artisans worldwide. We are an inclusive global network of individuals and organizations who value the social, cultural, historic, artistic, and economic importance of textile arts.
