3D Origami Weaving with Cate Buchanan
February 1, 2020 General Meeting at C.C. Young, The Point, Meeting Room behind the Fitness Room - 9:30

Creating depth and interest in fabric can come from many influences. Some people play with color to achieve depth. Others are interested in working with the structure to see how much depth can be achieved. Then there is the school that goes off the plane and truly works in three dimensions. We will explore one of these techniques at the next meeting.

Cate will share the technique learned from Susie Taylor at the last CHT conference. Utilizing weighted warps and separate warped yarn groups, different lengths of fabric can be woven individually and then pulled up and incorporated into the foundation fabric to create loops. The loops can then be manipulated into shapes from origami, or left to be texture as is. Cate will share pictures, samples and provide a demonstration to help fire your imagination.

We always have a "clothesline" show and tell segment in our meeting! Bring your latest creation and strut your stuff!

Card Weaving with Laura Herriott
January 4, 2020 General Meeting at C.C. Young, The Point, Meeting Room behind the Fitness Room - 9:30

Card weaving, also known as tablet weaving, is an ancient technique that was first used by the Egyptians to separate warp threads evenly on a warp-weighted loom. It is unclear when and where card weaving was invented, but it was widely used throughout Europe in the 16th century and evidence for its use was found in Africa, Asia, and South America. Tablet weaving is very versatile, holds a tremendous number and variety of design possibilities and requires only simple and inexpensive tools. In this program, we will discuss the fundamentals, take a look at several different tablet weave techniques. We will have several looms set up so you can try them out and see how fast and easy it is to get started tablet weaving.

Weaving with an Ondulé Reed by Margaret Arafat of the Fort Worth Weaving Guild
General Meeting at St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church, 1220 Belt Line Rd., Richardson, 9:30-12:00

An ondulé or fan reed is no longer a total mystery to the weaving community; knowing how to use one, however, is another thing. If you’ve never seen one (or really don’t know what one is), you can learn a bit about this unique weaving tool during the Program at the November 2nd Guild Meeting. Margaret will explain some of the challenges a weaver faces with an ondulé reed from designing to finishing a woven piece, challenges that move beyond weaving with a conventional reed. She will bring samples and finished pieces, some of which you may have seen, some new. In addition, she will demonstrate how to use the reed on her table loom, and then give you the chance to try weaving with it. Come take a quick ride down the slippery slope that she finds so rewarding.
